Abstract

Resting energy expenditure (REE) measured using indirect calorimetry was compared with REE calculated with the Harris-Benedict equation (HBE) using actual (ABW), ideal (IBW), and adjusted (AdjBW) body weight and with the Ireton-Jones Equation (IJE) in 19 obese females. Root mean square prediction error (RMSPE) analysis indicated that HBE using IBW and AdjBW were the most accurate predictors of measured REE. T test revealed no significant difference between HBE using IBW and measured REE. The IJE and HBE, using ABW and AdjBW, were significantly higher than measured REE. In conclusion, HBE using IBW or AdjBW is better than HBE using actual weight or IJE for estimating REE in obese women.
