Abstract

The flow model and constitutive equations proposed by Tsubaki, Hashimoto and Suetsugi (1982) are found valid at smaller values of the ratio of flow depth to sand grain size in the gravity flows of dry sand and hyperconcentrated mixtures of sand and water. Nondimensional parameters governing these flows are derived from the comparison between intergranular-stress and inertia terms in the momentum equations. Their flow behaviour can be explained by using the constitutive equations and the parameters.
