Abstract

With the recent increase in the construction of Super-high-rise structures and large complex buildings, the risk of fires has been on the rise. As the size of the structure becomes larger, the occupants’ evacuation time becomes longer, and the required firefighting structures become more complex, resulting in an increase in casualties and property damages. In South Korea, vertical-evacuation facilities and criteria have been proposed, but there are very limited horizontal-evaluation criteria. In this regard, this study sought to investigate the horizontal-evacuation facilities and criteria in South Korea to deduce the related problems, and to conduct a comparative review with the overseas horizontal-evacuation-related criteria. The results of this study can be utilized as basic data for the establishment and revision of horizontal-evacuation criteria in South Korea in the near future.
