Abstract

Liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) is widely used in preparing REBa 2Cu 3O 7− δ (REBCO, RE=rare earth element) superconducting film. In a previous study, step bunching has been reported during a very early stage of the LPE growth. In this paper, we report the comparative study on the LPE initial stage of REBCO. By using atomic force microscopy and optical microscopy, the initial growth process of SmBCO crystals was investigated and the similar step-bunching phenomenon was observed. Investigation by high-temperature optical microscopy of the a– b plane growth of YBCO crystals showed that the lateral growth rate of YBCO on the undamaged MgO surface is extremely fast.
