Abstract

Work motivation is one of the most researched constructs in organisational psychology. Both employees and employers have a great stake in maintaining high levels of work motivation. High motivation energises and directs workers to put in their best in their jobs and enables them to perform better. Employers always welcome better performance among their employees. While the importance of work motivation as a topic of research cannot be overestimated, how the type of ownership affects work motivation or whether gender is a determining factor here, and if organisational level has any bearing on one's motivation at work is worth considering. This study intends to study the effect of the type of ownership, gender and organisational level and their interaction on work motivation among 400 private and public sector employees drawn through the quota sampling technique from organisations located in the Aurangabad district of Maharastra. The result shows that private and public sector employees differ significantly on their work motivation level (p<0.01). Similarly, there is a significant difference between male and female employees in this respect. The interaction effect of gender and grade is significant, so is the interaction effect of gender and sector, as well as gender, sector and grade (p<0.01).
