Abstract

Abstract Kinetics and mechanisms of reactions of HgI2, HgBrI, or HgBr2 with CuI were studied in the solid state. Mercury(II) halides react via vapor phase, and reactions proceed through counter diffusion of Cu+ and Hg2+. X-Ray and chemical analyses indicate that powdered Cul gives Cu2HgI4 when mixed with HgI2 and a mixture of Cu2HgI4 and CuBr when mixed with HgBrI. CuI and HgBr2 react differently in different molar ratios. In a 1:2 molar ratio mixture of CuI and HgBr2, a new product CuHgBr3 and HgBrI are obtained. Data for lateral diffusion best fit the equation Xn=kt where X is the thickness of product layer at time t, and n and k are const. Formation of solid solutions among reactant and product phases is also noted.
