Abstract

A comparative study was carried out on the karyomorphology of the grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella (Val.) , silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (Val.) and their F1 hybrid. An attempt has been made to tentat ively classify the karyotype of tne F1 hybrid on the basis of arm ratio and external morpoloy.
 The diploid chromosome complements (2n) in grass carp, silver carp and the hybrid were found to be 48 each. The karyotype of grass carp was observed to comprise metacentric (15 pairs) and submetacentric (9 pairs) types while that of silver carp consisted 6-metacentric, 6-submetacentric and 2-subtelocentric pairs. The F1 hybrid karyotype was observed to consist 16-metacentric, 30-submetacentric and 2-subtelocentric chromosomes in total.
