Abstract

Abstract Different types of hard carbon coatings were investigated with respect to their fretting wear behaviour and compared to a reference PVD TiN coating. The hard carbon coatings investigated are CVD diamond and diamond-like carbon coatings produced by RF, arc and laser-assisted deposition. It was observed that these hard carbon coatings exhibit a low coefficient of friction and that they are remarkably resistant against fretting wear damage when compared to the PVD TiN coating, although the hardness of the carbon coatings is not always superior. The good performance of the hard carbon coatings is discussed in terms of the occurring wear phenomena.
