Abstract
Ovary development was compared in two closely related rodent species, the precocial spiny mouse (Acomys cahirinus) and the altricial rat (Rattus norvegicus). Different overall patterns of ovary maturation were found in the two species. The newborn spiny mouse exhibits considerably more advanced ovary growth than the same aged rat; however, differences gradually disappeared during the second postnatal week. Both species reached maturity at a common age, which suggests that the rate of postnatal ovary development in the spiny mouse is much slower than that of the rat.
