Abstract

Optimum feeder sizes for a variety of casting volumes and shapes have been determined for an Al-Si eutectic alloy using exothermic top feeders. Using the experimental data, the effectiveness of nine optimum feeder models reported in the literature was examined. Among these models, the ones proposed by Abcouwer and Merchant gave the best fit for the experimental data. Also feeder efficiency ratio was found to have a linear correlation with the feeder-casting shape factor ratio. This relationship was proposed as a new empirical optimum feeder model, and provided a better fit than all the previous models analysed in this study.
