Abstract

The results of 2 -D num erical simulations of hypersonic flow past 2-D blunt bodi es at low to high Knudsen Numbers are presented. Several computational models are employed, namely the Navier -Stokes equations, Burnett equations, Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC), and the Boltzmann equation. The effect of Knudsen num ber Kn varying fro m 0.01 to 0.1 is investigated for Mach 3 and Mach 10 flows p ast a blunt body. It is found that all the solutions (Navier -Stokes, Burnett, DSMC, and Boltzmann) at Kn = 0.1 are in close agreement with each other. However, at Kn = 0.01, there is a large diffe rence between the solutions based on Navier -Stokes and Burnett equations with those based on the DSMC and Boltzmann solver; however the N.S. and Burnett solutions agree with each other and the DSMC and Boltzmann solutions are in close agreement.
