Abstract

The clinical effects of mometasone furoate ointment 0.1% given once daily were compared with those of betamethasone valerate 0.1% ointment given twice daily. The study drugs were given to 72 patients with psoriasis vulgaris for 8 weeks in a randomized, single-blind, parallel-group, two-center study. The results indicated that mometasone had superior efficacy over betamethasone after 4 and 8 weeks ( P = 0.03 at both evaluations). All mometasone patients reported the drug to be excellent/acceptable from a cosmetic point of view. The corresponding percentage figure in the betamethasone group was 86%. Ninety-one percent of the mometasone patients compared with 58% of the patients in the betamethasone group wanted to use the drug again ( P = 0.0003). Both the drugs were well tolerated.
