Abstract

BackgroundSeveral people lose their life while waiting for a transplant, due to lack of suitable donor. According to the global activity in organ transplantation the number of transplants occurring is less than 10% of global needs. The requirement for organ donors has never been greater. Aim of the studyTo find out the Knowledge and Attitude regarding tissues and organ donation among selected population in New Delhi. MethodsA Cross Sectional study was conducted on 381 subjects from New Delhi (300-general population; 81-recipient's relatives). Two structured questionnaires were used to assess the knowledge of the subjects regarding tissues and organ donation. ResultsA statistically significant higher knowledge and attitude score in relatives of transplant patients were found compared with general population (p < 0.05). ConclusionEven though relatives of transplant patients were better informed, had more knowledge and had a more positive attitude regarding tissues and organ donation, we have to increase efforts to impart knowledge regarding tissues and organ donation to bring about change in attitude of people towards tissue and organ donation.
