Abstract

The problem under consideration was why cord blood with an increased tendency to form methemoglobin and a decrease in a methemoglobin reducing system did not show an increased level of methemoglobin. A comparative study was conducted of 6 important intra-erythrocytic enzymes, namely DPNH methemoglobin reductase, TPNH methemoglobin reductase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glutathione reductase, lactic and malic dehydrogenases. In cord blood samples there are found to be a significant decrease in the DPNH methemoglobin reductase activity and a highly significant increase in the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and glutathione reductase. It was postulated that the expected accumulation of methemoglobin in cord blood samples was prevented by an increased reduction of methemoglobin by reduced glutathione which was shown to be formed at a greater rate in cord blood.
