Abstract

Dipterex has been compared with tartar emetic in the treatment of urinary schistosomiasis. Dipterex is as effective as tartar emetic but does not affect the heart, as tartar emetic does. The rise in serum glutamic oxalic transaminase during tartar emetic treatment has been shown to be due to liver cell damage caused by the tartar emetic itself; this does not occur with Dipterex, and occurs in the absence of schistosomiasis. It is also found in untreated schistosomiasis.
