Abstract

The technique of inductively coupled plasma (ICP), has been employed for monitoring the level of 24 different elements in two equivalent engine oils. Tracing have been made at 0, 500, 1000, 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000, and 6000 km of operation. In the case of both of the oils, the results indicate decreasing as well as increasing trends in concentrations of different elements. The obtained data have been interpreted based on depletion of additives, wear, leakage and vaporization processes. In contrast to chemical analysis which have been made at different kilometers, physical measurements were merely performed at 0 and 6000 km of operation. The possible reasons for physical changes have also been discussed. Based on chemical analysis and physical measurements, the performance of the oils have been compared.
