This article attempts to bring order to the profusion of historical terms relating to timber construction. It gives three main types: heavy timber frame, vertical wood members planted in ground, and horizontal wood members dovetailed at corners, and goes on to enumerate and describe various sub-types giving their many french and english names, and their historical developments; With photographs.
