Abstract

Helianthemum vesicarium Boiss. and H. ventosum Boiss (Cistaceae) are two perennial plant species that inhabit the hills around Sede Boqer. The former grows mainly on north-facing, and the latter on south-facing slopes. On north-facing slopes, soil moisture is higher and the temperature and soil salinity are lower than on south-facing slopes. Scarified seeds of H. ventosum germinate faster and at higher temperature and salinity than those of H. vesicarium. These appear to be adaptations of the two species to their respective habitats. The germination percentage of unscarified seeds of both species is very low.
