Abstract

Subgroup structure, spacing patterns, and the relationship between spatial and behavioral interations were compared for captive baboons and squirrel monkeys. Analysis of the structure, intensity, and permanence of subgroups revealed that the baboons formed low intensity, overlapping subgroups which were relatively flexible while the squirrel monkeys segregated into permanent, high intensity, mutually exclusive cliques. Clique associations and social proximity relationships were found to be better predictors than dominance rank of the nature and frequency of behavioral interactions in the two colonies.
