Abstract

Consumer Protection Act 1986 and Consumer Protection Act 2019 have been crucial legislative frameworks in India, aiming to safeguard consumer rights and ensure fair trade practices. This article provides a comparative analysis of these acts, highlighting the key features and improvements brought about by the Consumer Protection Act 2019. The analysis delves into the scope and definition of consumers, the dispute redressal mechanism, product liability, and provisions against misleading advertisements. The Consumer Protection Act 2019 expands its scope to cover online transactions and ecommerce, introduces the Central Consumer Protection Authority, and mandates product liability, holding all stakeholders accountable. The act also empowers the CCPA to take swift action against misleading advertisements. The comparative study underscores the importance of the updated legal framework in enhancing consumer protection and promoting a responsible business environment in India.
