Abstract

The technology surrounding multilevel inverters has materialised recently as an imperative substitute in the area of high-power medium-voltage energy control. The advancement of high capacity power electronics in high voltage direct current applications, contribute to developing and implementing future transmission networks through a DC backbone, presenting a realistic and advantageous option over traditional AC approaches. This paper analyses and compares the three-level and five-level neutral point clamped multilevel inverter used for DC to AC power conversion. The selected software used is MATLAB/Simulink for the simulation of the multilevel inverters. This paper compares the total harmonic distortion in the output voltage, produced for a three-level and five-level inverter. The total harmonic distortion in a five-level inverter is less than a three-level inverter.
