Abstract
This paper presents a new miniaturization technology of microstrip antenna. The proposed design consists of a microstrip antenna with a U-shaped patch which is obtained by adding two downward rims at the two radiating edges of the patch and a finite U-shaped ground plane which is obtained by adding two upward rims at the edges of the finite ground plane in the direction of radiating edge. Experimental study was carried out by reducing the distance between the downward rim and the upward rim. Adding two upward rims at the finite ground plane, a significant lowering of resonant frequency is obtained with a no reduced operational gain in comparison to the antenna without adding two upward rims. With the design a resonant frequency reduction of 19.7% is obtained and the antenna gain can reach to 5.8dBi at the resonant frequency 906MHz.
