Abstract

In this paper, a compact frequency reconfigurable monopole antenna with tunable ultra-wideband (UWB), band-pass, and band-stop features is presented. The designed antenna has a low profile of 17 – 31.5 – 0.127 mm3 constructed from an elliptic patch surrounding by another elliptic ring printed on RT/duroid substrate, fed by an edge-feed transmission line and a proper partial ground plane. The reconfigurable performance is achieved by inserting two PIN diodes, one between the patch and the feed line and the other in the gap of the elliptic ring. By changing the states of the PIN diode, the antenna bandwidth characteristics change resulting in three operating modes including UWB, band-pass, and band-reject antenna performance. In each operating state, the antenna performance has been examined in terms of S-parameter, maximum gain, radiation efficiency, and radiation pattern characteristics using CST Studio Suite 3-D EM software.
