Abstract
In this paper, we propose a dual band microstrip patch antenna on a dielectric substrate with Complementary Split Ring Resonators (CSRR) employed in the ground plane. At first, the conventional microstrip patch antenna (MPA) designed for 3.6GHz and then the miniaturization and dual band resonance achieved by introducing single complementary split ring in the ground plane. Resonant frequency, gain and radiation characteristics are examined for various lengths of CSRR. The simulation results demonstrated that significant size reduction and dual band operation are feasible for a microstrip antenna without increasing the size by using the CSRR loaded ground plane. Simply by varying the length of the CSRR, the variation in the lower resonant frequency is highly observed from 3 GHz to 1.2 GHz. Consequently, the proposed antenna achieves around a 70% reduction in the resonant frequency as well as 89% reduction in the radiating patch size compared to the conventional microstrip antenna.
