Abstract

The concept of practicing anthropology is ideally very specific, involving the use of anthropological methods outside of the teaching environment. In reality, however, the practice of anthropology can take place in a wide range of settings including the academic environment. As a medical anthropologist, Dennis Frate has been employed as a full-time health researcher for 24 years. While he was doing this research, he taught five years in a medical school and nineteen years at a school of pharmacy. During that time both basic and applied health research efforts were supported by almost $7 million in external funding.
