Abstract
This paper describes an efficient implementation of a communications protocol using single-chip microprocessors as slave devices in a master/slave system with a serial bus architecture. Each slave device executes a communication protocol as well as a real-time application task such as control, data acquisition or signal processing. The interaction between the communications and the application task is discussed and the timing conflicts highlighted as a result of both tasks running on a single processor. The application of the protocol in a distributed data acquisition system is also described.
