Abstract

The structure of the oxidized Cu(001) surface has been investigated at room temperature using spot profile analysis LEED (SPALEED) and helium-atom diffraction. In both measurements the observed 1 4 - order diffraction spots of the (2√2 × √2)R45° structure show a splitting which is attributed to a large number of small translationally displaced domains. Extensive Eikonal simulations of the helium atom results indicate that [ 3 2 , 1 2 ,0] a translational domain displacements are preferred. Evidence for areas with different lattice constants is also presented.
