Abstract

This column describes the rise and fall of a geophysical company. The story starts in late 1947. The Korean War (officially a “police action”) was two years in the future. Ghawar, the world's largest oil field, would be discovered the following year. In 1946 a large earthquake occurred in the Aleutians resulting in a tsunami, which struck Hilo on the big island of Hawaii killing 159 people and causing major damage. I graduated from high school. Geophysical Service, Inc. was operating several seismic crews for the California Company (Calco) in southern Louisiana. But all was not well. Ewin Gaby, the supervisor of all GSI crews in South Louisiana and Mississippi was about to give notice. It quickly got around that he was not only resigning but starting his own company.
