Abstract A search for RR Lyrae variables in the vicinity of the old Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) cluster Hodge 11 has resulted in the discovery of only one variable, which is probably a field star. A color-magnitude diagram (CMD) confirms that the cluster is very metal poor, [Fe/H]= -2.0+/-0.2, with E(V-I) = 0.10+/-0.02. The distribution of stars on the horizontal branch (HB) is skewed to the extent that only blue HB stars appear to be present-these have a bifurcated grouping, as in M 15. There are a few extremely blue stars that appear to be on a hotter extension of the HB- as they have no field counterparts these stars are likely cluster members. If the LMC distance modulus is assumed to be 18.5 mag, and a geometric correction corresponding to the position of Hodge 11 of -0.09 mag is applied, then M_v_(HB) = 0.44+/-0.12, in excellent agreement with that found for other old LMC clusters. The surrounding field population mostly has age 2-3 Gyr and [Fe/H]~-0.5- there is a significant break in the luminosity function at ~2 Gyr in that there are only a few younger stars. A small cluster near Hodge 11 has age ~1.5 Gyr.
