Abstract

We report only the second case of a granular cell tumour colliding with adenocarcinoma in the oesophagus. A 63-year-old female was found to have a 2 cm nodule in the distal oesophagus as part of follow-up after an episode of gastroenteritis with PR bleeding. The nodule was identified in a short segment of Barrett’s oesophagus on endoscopy. A biopsy revealed an intramucosal adenocarcinoma. Imaging with CT scan, ultrasound and PET showed the tumour to be confined within the oesophageal mucosa. An endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) of the nodule was performed and histology revealed the adenocarcinoma infiltrating a granular cell tumour. A resection margin was focally involved by adenocarcinoma and further EMR was preformed. Follow up endoscopic biopsies have shown no further invasive carcinoma. Granular cell tumours of the gastrointestinal tract are uncommon but have been shown to co-exist with true neoplasms; however, only one previous case of collision with adenocarcinoma in the oesophagus has been reported.
