Abstract
This article is a collaboration between a black student and white teacher about the use of the n-word in a university classroom. The authors share their personal contexts, reactions, and thought-processes around the incident and the classroom conversations that followed. Further, the student asks and answers questions about her experience as a black student on a primarily white campus with the hope that instructors will become more informed about the impact of language and demographic disparity in the classroom.
