Abstract

Background: To better define miss rates of gastroscopy (OGD) and the natural history of upper gastrointestinal cancer (UGC) we studied patients who had an OGD without cancer subsequently diagnosed with an UGC. Our hypothesis was that a normal upper endoscopy rarely misses UGC.Methods: A prospectively maintained electronic database was used to identify all patients who underwent OGD between 1990 and 2004 at the study institution. Cases were selected in whom this did not reveal a malignant, premalignant or potentially malignant lesion and those not enrolled in a surveillance program.
