Abstract

In this paper, we adopt a novel approach, based on a combination of narrative and case study analysis, to address internationalization in family firms. Based on a qualitative, induction-driven study of four cases, we propose a co-evolution framework to show how internationalization unfolds in these multi-generational family firms. We found that professionalization and manager’s legitimacy affect internationalization and vice versa. Our findings suggest that both the family and the firm build each other’s environment reciprocally influencing each other’s development. We suggest a co-evolutionary model that links internationalization speed to professionalization and legitimacy and offer testable propositions to guide future research.
