Abstract

Classifications of rock of the active roof of gently inclined seams have been developed which describe the units according to their stability, collapsibility, and controllability, and also classify grounds according to their load-carrying capacity and swelling rates. A comparison study of these and other classifications developed for various coal basins in the USSR suggests that they are useful for predicting the main regularities of the manifestations of rock pressure from the build and lithologic composition of roofs, the strength of component rocks, the interaction with support systems, and other factors.
