Abstract

Aron Jean-Marie Lustiger, who was born a Jew and whose mother perished in Auschwitz, converted to Catholicism during the war. In 1984, as Cardinal-Archbishop of Paris, he accepted the proposal of two French academics, Jean-Louis Missika and Dominique Wolton, to hold an in-depth dialogue whose principle aim would be to show how Cardinal Lustiger's itinerary “condenses the major spiritual and intellectual questions of twentieth century Europe”. This confrontation between “a man of faith and two ‘honest men’ representing secularized society and modern rationalism” resulted in a widely acclaimed bestseller entitled Le Choix de Dieu published in Paris by Editions de Fallois in December 1987. The following excerpts are taken from the book's section on “Judaism and Christianity”. The English translation will be published in the coming months by Ignatius Press, San Francisco.
