Abstract

Standard Galerkin finite element method (FEM) performs poorly when simulating convection dominated problems using the Eulerian formulation. A numerical method for analyzing transient eddy-current magnetic field in high-speed rotating solid conductors using characteristic Galerkin finite element method (CGFEM) is presented. The convection-diffusion equation is discretized implicitly in time domain via the method of characteristics and in space via piecewise quadratic finite elements. An example with extremely large Peclet number is solved by using the CGFEM to validate its effectiveness. TEAM workshop problem 30 A which is a practical case with high-speed rotating conductors is studied to showcase the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method.
