Abstract
1. 1. Lateral cephalometric x-ray films of thirty normal Chinese (Cantonese) male adults were analyzed. 2. 2. The sample was selected from more than 300 adult Chinese in Hong Kong. 3. 3. The criteria for selection were Cantonese males between 18 to 33 years, with clinically excellent occlusion, pleasing or acceptable profile, and no previous orthodontic treatment. 4. 4. Part 1 of the investigation used the Downs' analysis. 6 Results confirmed Wong's 4 findings that the Chinese present a Class II facial pattern when compared to Caucasian standards. Statistical tests for significance of difference between means of the two samples compared were carried out. All measurements, except the A-B plane, were found to be significantly different (P < 0.001) from the Caucasian standards. 5. 5. Part 2 of the investigation used a modified Alabama analysis. 10 Standards for Chinese were established, and the results were also tested statistically. 6. 6. Part 3 of the investigation was on the soft-tissue profile. The Chinese lips were found to be protrusive in relation to the esthetic plane and the subnasale-pogonion plane.
