Abstract

1. 1. Enzymic components catalyzing metabolic degradation of certain cell wall constituents of Avena sativa L. coleoptiles were studied. An enzyme system, bound to crude cell wall preparations and capable of hydrolzying cell wall polysaccharides, was found. This system consisted of at least two components, one hydrolyzing polysaccharide to oligosaccharide, and the second converting oligosaccharide to monosaccharide. 2. 2. Mannitol had no effect on the basal enzymic activity, but suppressed indoleacetic acid-induced increase in enzymic activity. Peroxyacetyl nitrate treatment of tissue in viro or in vitro resulted in a partially inactivated system.
