Abstract

A cell vertex and cell centred forms of finite volume (FV) method is developed for the analysis of transversely loaded plates. The Mindlin–Reissner plate theory is utilized. Some test cases are analysed and the lateral displacement, bending moment and shear force distributions from both formulations are compared with each other and with the standard finite element (FE) predictions. When using a Mindlin–Reissner based finite element formulation, locking occurs in thin plate analysis but in the both forms of FV formulation locking behaviour is not observed and results converge to the analytical results.
