Abstract

In 2007 we saw the number of centarians in the UK reach a record high, thanks to improvements in health and social care. With the ever ageing population, however, comes increased rates of dementia. Dementia UK (2007) predicts that by 2051 1.7 million people in the UK will have dementia, which will subsequently impact on the care industry. Of course, disease and dementia are not an inevitability of ageing, and old age for many can be a time of learning and development. A key aim of Nursing & Residential Care is to assist nurses, care assistants and managers in improving clinical practice, for example, in dementia care, and also to provide inspiration for care techniques and activities to facilitate and brighten the daily lives of residents and staff.
