Es erben sich Gesetz' und Rechte wie eine ewige Krankheit fort, and the same might be said of the punctuation gratuitously inserted into medieval manuscripts. Once an editor has added the punctuation he considers appropriate, later scholars tend to transmit it unquestioningly and to interpret the text as if the punctuation were that of the original poet, apparently unaware that he who interpolated the punctuation insinuated his own interpretation into the text with it. This process is well illustrated in Walther von der Vogelweide's song beginning Bin ich dir unmaere, into which Lachmann placed a period that has remained sacrosanct in all later revisions of his edition and, so far as I can ascertain, in all others too.'
