Abstract

In this paper we present a case study covering mathematical modeling, system identification, and controller design of a two tank fluid level control system. The case study is presented as a series of questions and answers, which could be used to design a series of homeworks or a term paper in a modular control engineering course. The case study is motivated by a realistic application of a two tank problem, addressing some fundamental control oriented issues such as physical plant identification, transformation from discrete-time to continuous-time, and controller design. All questions are answered in a logical and technically sound manner, thus forming a cohesive case study.
