Abstract

The dramatic increase use of electricity each year in Malaysia requires the government to take the initiative on the aspect of energy efficiency in order to address the environmental issues involving climate change and the issue of energy consumption through the application of green technology. One of them is by ensuring the use of electricity more efficient and minimizing wastage of energy consumption. Implementation of energy management in lighting system is one of the common practice. This paper presents an evaluation on efficiency in energy consumption for the lighting system in the selected area in the building of Faculty of Technical & Vocational Education (FPTV), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and propose a lighting design which compliance to MS 1525:2014 as strategic plan to achieve the optimum use of energy. Also, the return on investment (ROI) according to the choice of lamp type was analyze to determine how much energy is being saved. The lamp type with energy efficient and environmentally friendly chosen in this case study was the LED. Analysis of the data showed that the used of LED lights are able to provide energy saving of 30%–80% compared to ordinary bulbs. Hence, this strategy is strongly recommended in order to minimize the electricity usage.
