Abstract

Abstract Road safety is a growing social concern in the present day world. Rapid expansion in the road network and high motorization growth has led to serious impacts on road safety levels in India. The analysis of road accident data 2015 reveals that about 1,374 accidents and 400 deaths took place every day on Indian roads, which further converted into 57 accidents and loss of 17 lives on an average every hour in India. As per Ministry of Road Transport & Highways Accident Data 2011-12, it was observed that a stretch on national highway 12 (NH-12) is India’s 5 th most deadly area in terms of road accident deaths claiming 65 lives in 2011-12. Observing the severity of the issue an attempt was made to study the causes and to propose the remedial measures for the accidents prone block spots within the selected stretch. The accident data was collected from various sources and the black spots were identified. On the basis of the collected data, the safety deficiencies such as improper installation of traffic signals, absence of road markings, lack of proper enforcement at intersection etc. were identified. In the end the measures for the improvement of the safety deficiencies for reducing the accidents have been presented. Keywords: Road safety, accidents, safety deficiencies.
