Abstract

The main objective of the paper is to build the circuit in the PSCAD software and observe the results for the lightning impulse and the switching impulse. The paper presents the simulation results obtained in the software. When a high impulse lightning strikes occurs the transformer current is high and such a high current may damage the transformer. To prevent the damage occurring to the transformer a metal oxide surge arrester is connected across it so that when a lightning strikes occurs it absorbs the energy of the surge and there by providing protection to transformer from the high current as shown in the discussed results. The surge arrester absorbs the energy of the surge and bypasses it to ground. Similarly when a high impulse switching surge appears the surge arrester operates and thereby protecting the transformer. The V-I characteristic of the surge arrester will be plotted and the behavior of the metal oxide surge arrester is found to be linear. This paper presents the lightning impulse surge of 2/16μs wave shape and the protective level of transformer is found to be less than 650KV. Similarly a switching surge of 100/500μs wave shape is plotted and the protective level of transformer is found to be below 650KV.
