Abstract
This case study focuses on the linguistic strategies used by native Romanian speakers to express apologies. The study evaluates the responses of 100 undergraduate students between 2018 and 2020 using a Discourse Completion Test. The analysis reveals that Romanian speakers employ direct apologies with different politeness levels, whereas indirect apologies have multifaceted intentions and effects. In cases of serious transgressions, Romanian speakers use a variety of techniques to restore social balance, emphasizing accountability and ownership. The study also emphasizes the interaction between direct and indirect apology forms, context-dependent language use, and the importance of accountability in Romanian apologies.
