Abstract

The paper describes the lack of coherent or consistent policies within Canada which would enable the recognition and ultimately the preservation of worthy vessels of historic importance. Current designations of vessels as “National Historic Sites” are very few, and the responsible departments within government at all levels lack a clear set of criteria for such designation. The impact of that state of affairs on the attempts at preservation and restoration of the century-old, historic steam tug Master in British Columbia is described.
