Macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) is a severe and rare fatal complication of systemic inflam - matory diseases in childhood. MAS has been described in patients with several rheumatic diseases, including systemic onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SoJIA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and Kawasaki disease.
