Abstract

A 26-year-old woman admitted to the hospital because of recurred tumor in the CD area of the right breast. She had been operated on twice for the primary and recurred breast tumors in the same area. After this admission for the re-recurred breast tumor, histological examination of the biopsy specimen indicated that the lesion was phyllodes tumor (borderline lesion). Quadrantectomy was performed keeping a wide extension of surgical margin but conserving the brest. Regarding the morphology of the tumor, papillary proliferation was observed in the cyst. Compared with the previous specimens from this patient, the interstitial cells in the present specimen showed more mitoses, marked nuclear atypism and the existence of polynuclear giant cells. Based on these histopathological findings, the patient was diagnosed as having a malignant phyllodes tumor. No oncocytes were observed in the remaining stump, and lymph node metastasis was not confirmed. Quadrantectomy may be regarded as an effective surgical treatment for phyllodes tumor.
