Abstract

Question: A 46-year-old man with a history of recurrent hepatic abscesses presents to the emergency department with fevers, chills, and malaise. Fluid cultures from prior abscesses show no growth, and serologic testing for Entamoeba histolytica, echinococcosis, toxoplasmosis, leptospirosis, human immunodeficiency virus, and fungal etiologies were also negative. He has undergone multiple courses of prolonged intravenous antibiotics with his last course 1 year before the current presentation.
